5 years ago today, Katelan and I gave our first talk on cut-ups The Cut In Creation at Morbid Anatomy Museum in Brooklyn, NY. The Cut In Creation ended up becoming the subtitle for my book, Scansion in Psychoanalysis and Art!
It was January 11, 2016. David Bowie had died the day before. Katelan and I had our talk that night and I was so tired! But somehow that always seems to be how it goes, isn’t it? Sometimes I think it might just be better that way because I can’t overthink or be as anxious when I’m tired like that and I just have to go with the flow.
The talk was amazing of course, Katelan and I are such a team, and it was the first talk of many to come. That night we had an after party at Gemini Scorpio lounge and played an all Bowie playlist all night.
The next day, we hopped on a plane and flew through a portal to Chicago, where we gave our second cut-up talk at Madame Zuzu’s the next day. Of course since then, Katelan has moved to Chicago (and recently redesigned the entirety of Madame Zuzu’s cafe) and I moved to Sweden.
This weekend to celebrate Bowiemas, I created some cut-up collages in honor of him and the inspiration that he is, while listening to Mary Wild’s Projections course via The Freud Museum, London on his filmography and videography. I listened to Mary, lit a candle atop of Bowie’s oil, put some of the oil on me as well, and created a series of collages. I can’t show them all to yet, as they will be included in our upcoming book, but I can share this one, as well as the oil that I created for Bowie the night of his death.
For more about this process, join me over at Magic Mondays!
